The ceramic vessel is handcrafted by the master potters of the Lettie Stuart Pottery in Sierra Leone and filled with carefully poured natural wax, creating an object to be enjoyed long after the candle has burned.
The Process:
The journey of every Binta Candle begins with clay. Sourced from a clay-rich village in Sierra Leone, the raw clay is transported to the pottery centre where it is left to dry naturally before being carefully processed. Once dry, the clay is pounded, ground into a fine powder, and sieved to remove impurities. Water is then added, and the clay is left to rest before being hand-kneaded and prepared for shaping.
Using traditional kick wheels, skilled artisans carefully shape each vessel by hand. No two pieces are exactly alike, making every candle vessel unique. The freshly formed pottery then enters a lengthy drying process, which can take up to three weeks depending on weather conditions. During the rainy season, high humidity can significantly extend drying times.
Once thoroughly dry, the vessels undergo their first firing in a wood-fired kiln. This bisque firing, lasting at least 12 hours, gives strength to the clay while adding subtle variations and character to each piece. A glaze is then applied before a second firing transforms the pottery into its finished form.
The finished vessels are then paired with hand-poured candle wax, carefully crafted to complement the natural beauty of the ceramic. The result is a candle designed to be enjoyed both during and beyond its burn life. Once the candle has been used, the vessel can continue its story as a decorative bowl, planter, or treasured object within the home.
